What is an influencer?
"Influencers" have become more and more popular in the social media age. Companies discovered that word of mouth sales are way better advertising than paying for ad space so they started using influencers to help push their products. An influencer is someone who influences another to buy a specific product or service by recommending it to their friends, family and following, typically on social media. Influence marketing actually started with celebrities, but when reality TV stars and spouses of famous folk started talking about products companies took notice that they were generating sales and started paying them!
Quality over Quantity
When Instagram took note of influencer marketing they gave special features to accounts that had over 10k followers. This was the "minimum standard" to get paid by brands. There were some pretty notable issues that this caused such as buying fake followers. Brands have now caught on to these slimy tactics and are now more focused on your engagement rate. It's no longer about how many followers you have, but the quality of those followers. Are they liking and commenting on your posts? How many times do they click on your link? Are they saving your post for later or sharing your post with friends? These all count towards your engagement rate and it's much more important now than having 100k followers.
Is it hard to be an influencer?
It can be, but it's not impossible. Like with any job, it takes dedication and discipline. You have to be consistent with your content and your followers have to trust your opinion. We live in a world now where attention spans are short and everyone questions everything! You need to be savvy enough to grab their attention and hold it. You also need to build know, like, and trust with your audience. If they feel like they know you, they are more likely to buy a product you recommend.
How to make money as an influencer
There are multiple ways to make money as an influencer in 2022! The amount of money you make will depend on the type of work, how much engagement you get, or your scope of influence. It can be anywhere from free products to thousands of dollars! The type of work you do will also determine if you are paid once, or on a continual basis. Influencers can choose between many different types of work such as collaborations, affiliate marketing, or even social selling. Nowadays influencers can also get paid to be guest speakers or appear at events.
Type of Work Available
Brands will sometimes pay an influencer with free products in exchange for reviews, or they will pay a small fee for pictures and video content such as reels, posts, and stories. These are "collaborations" or "collabs".
You can also become a brand ambassador or partner, also referred to as an affiliate partner. This is more of a long-term commitment that is paid out based on commission or the number of sales you bring in. Commission is typically anywhere from 2-12%. Each program will offer a different commission and some may put a cap on how much you can make. Make sure to read the fine print!
Network marketing is typically when you sell products directly to your customers or following from one specific brand. There are usually ways to build and coach others and get paid for your mentorship. Network marketing companies usually offer incentive trips, cars, bonuses, and more for your continued effort.
