Let's start out by saying; this is a work in progress. My insomnia story is not quite over, but it is getting better! Let me quickly explain where I am coming from, so you can better understand where I am. I hope that through knowing my journey, you understand why this is so important to me to talk about on the blog. Whether you have insomnia, or even just feel like you don't get enough restful sleep, or you know someone who is struggling, you are not alone!

How it started:

It started out the same way most women who struggle to sleep start out... KIDS! Yup, those little buggers ruin everything! As most of you know, I had a baby in 2020. He is quite literally a blessing in our lives and the best part of our whole year! But he has come with some unexpected challenges. For one, he is not a great sleeper. This is new to me; my firstborn was a perfect baby. No, I'm not exaggerating. We hit the "good baby jackpot" with him! My youngest, though, is bound and determined to make up for what his older brother missed.

So, long story short, when you are stressed (which we'll talk more about later), you are forced to wake up (thanks, baby), and you don't have the right tools or opportunity to sleep... That's when insomnia starts to creep in.

What it was like:

I struggle(d) to fall asleep in the first place.

If I wasn't woken up by my baby I was woken up by stupid things:

  • windchimes

  • snoring

  • someone rolled over

  • heavy breathing

  • twitching

  • remembering something I forgot

  • too hot/too cold

  • nothing. Like no reason at all, you just wake up!

I would wake up early but was too tired to actually get out of bed.

During the day I was groggy, foggy, exhausted, unmotivated.

Constantly yawning.

Low energy or desire to do anything.

How I am fixing it:

With a nighttime routine! Just like we put babies and kids on nighttime routines, I'm putting myself on a nighttime routine! "There's no time for that, your joking!" No, I'm not kidding. This is what self-care is, people. You have to find the time, you have to prioritize the time, you have to be realistic. Trust me, YOU are worth it!

What my routine looks like:

It does not have to be complicated or take 2 hours, keep it simple!

  • First off, always drink enough water throughout the day! Staying hydrated does a million good things for your body. I quit drinking Mt. Dew this year and have been focusing on getting enough water! It has been the best decision!

  • At the beginning of my routine, I take my snap. This gives it time to "kick in" while I do the rest of my routine. What I love about this stuff is that it doesn't make me a zombie or "pass out". It helps me get more restful sleep so that I have more energy the following day. Bonus; it keeps your metabolism running so you can "Sleep AND Slim" at the same time!

  • Then I do my skincare routine. This consists of washing my face and applying my Dream Luxe Sleeping Mask. You read that right, it's a mask you can sleep in! It's a game-changer and I don't think I can live without it anymore! Then I finish my routine with a Baobab Lip Mask for perfectly luscious lips, even during Utah's dry winter!

AND THAT'S IT!

You guys, this whole routine takes me maybe 10-15 minutes from start to finish. It really calms me down, puts me in the mood, and benefits not only my sleep but my physical and mental health too! I have better skin, I can focus during the day, and I am a much happier mom. That last one is the pure reason why I am focusing so hard on getting better sleep.

It's important to take care of yourself so that you can take care of others!

Now obviously my journey is not perfect nor is it complete, but these small little changes have made ALL the difference. If you have any questions, or you are interested in any of the products I mentioned, please reach out to me! I would be more than thrilled to talk to you about it and get you the info you need.

Lynsey! This is just what I needed to read! I seriously have been sleeping terribly my whole life but worse since my baby was born. I have been think about a nighttime routine now that we are trying to get a real schedule going and this gave me just the push I needed. Thanks, girl! ❤
